You are to write a 2-3 page response to the following question : How did Rome grow from a single city into a diverse and vast Empire?

USE YOUR BOOK FOR THIS PLEASE! Also the questions we went over on Friday will greatly help you with this assignment.

Also be prepared to answer questions on Claudius as well.

2. What is the myth surrounding the foundation of Rome?

3. Provide in detail the government system in Rome. (Cursus Honorum)

4. Who were the Plebeians? Why were they fighting for their rights?

5. What were the Punic Wars? Who was involved and what was the effect of this war?

6. What is imperialism and how did Rome establish it?

7. Questions 1-6 focus on the rise of the Roman Republic – please provide dates on a time line for these specific questions.

8. Who was Julius Caesar and how did he help build up the Roman Republic?

9. What happened after Julius Caesar was murdered? Who was Augustus?

10. How did Augustus start the beginning of an Empire?

11. Who was Marcus Aurelius and what did he do?

12. What is the Pax Romana? – provide dates and details

13. Who is Virgil and what do we need to know about him?

14. What is diversity and how does it affect Rome?

15. Why were the Jews rebelling, against whom were they rebelling and where?

16. Who was Jesus? Why is he important?

17. How did Constantine allow for the religion of Christianity to prosper?

18. For questions 8-17 please provide a timeline of the dates for the specific questions – you may add it onto the timeline for questions 1-6

For your paper due on your Roman monument you may use the following format to help you:


I - Introduction: Explain the topic then provide a thesis that ARGUES why your monument is the best example of the Roman Empire

II - First body paragraph: Where is your monument - why was it constructed?

III. - How is this monument an example of the Roman Empire - be specific

IV. - Is your monument still standing - if so why? if not then why not?

V. - Conclusion - restate your thesis and provide closing states that revolve around the three body paragraphs.

Your homework for Tuesday's class is the following:

  • BRING IN INFORMATION ON YOUR MONUMENT - we will be using time in class to work on the projects

For the project I remind you:
  1. The presentation is a group effort - you all must work together to make this a fantastic project
  2. The individual paper MUST answer the question "How does one monument demonstrate the power of the Roman Empire?" You must answer this question in a thesis statement arguing the significance of the monument.
  3. You may work in a group to answer this question but I want individual papers.
